Post-Operative Instructions for all patients

Taking care of yourself after surgery:

  • These are basic suggestions to improve your recovery and should be supplemented by any other directions from your doctor or nurse.
  • You may not drive yourself home after surgery. A family member or friend must drive you home or accompany you in a Uber/taxi or public transportation.
  • It is advisable that you have an adult with you for at least 12 hours after you arrive home.
  • Advance slowly to a regular diet as tolerated.
  • You may shower the next day.
  • Follow any specific home care instructions you receive after your surgery.
  • You will likely stay at the hospital or surgery center for approximately 1-2 hours after the surgery is completed.
  • The recovery room staff will discharge you when they are assured you are in stable condition. HOWEVER, you could still feel sleepy, slightly dizzy, or nauseated. These are possible and normal side effects of anesthesia and can last for 12-24 hours.
  • Our staff will call you the next morning to check in and schedule your follow-up visit.

Wait at least 24 hours after you arrive home to:

  • Drive
  • Operate any motorized equipment
  • Sign any important documents
  • Drink any alcoholic beverages
  • Take any medicine not prescribed or acknowledged by your surgeon
