Balloon Sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic sinusitis. It involves inserting a small balloon catheter into the blocked sinus passages and inflating it to widen the sinus openings. This helps restore normal drainage and relieve symptoms like congestion, facial pressure, and headaches. Unlike traditional sinus surgery, Balloon Sinuplasty requires no cutting or removal of bone and tissue, resulting in a quicker recovery with minimal discomfort. It is typically performed under local or general anesthesia and is an effective option for patients who have not found relief from medication. Most patients resume normal activities within a day.
Before the Procedure:
You’ll receive a local anesthetic to numb your nasal passages, and possibly light sedation. Medications like blood thinners may need to be avoided.
During the Procedure:
A small balloon catheter is inserted through your nostril into the blocked sinus. The balloon is inflated to open the sinus and restore drainage.
Minimal Discomfort:
The procedure is minimally invasive, and most patients feel little to no pain, with only mild pressure or discomfort.
After the Procedure:
Recovery is quick, with mild congestion or discomfort for a few hours to a day. You may be advised to avoid strenuous activities and use saline sprays.
Minimally Invasive – The procedure requires no cutting or removal of bone or tissue, making it safer and less traumatic.
Quick Recovery – Most patients can resume normal activities within 24-48 hours, unlike traditional sinus surgery, which requires longer downtime.
Effective Relief – It provides long-term relief from chronic sinusitis symptoms, such as congestion and facial pressure, as well as prevents future sinus infections.
Lower Risk of Complications – Since no tissue is removed, there is a reduced risk of bleeding, scarring, or infection.
Performed Under Local Anesthesia – Many procedures can be done in an outpatient setting using local anesthesia, reducing the risks and costs associated with general anesthesia.
