Preparing for Surgery

Note: These instructions are specifically for patients undergoing surgery at Abington Surgery Center or St. Mary Ambulatory Surgery Center under general anesthesia. If you are scheduled for an office procedure, there is no need to fast, and you may plan to drive yourself unless any pre-operative medications have been prescribed.

1. Surgical Registration

All patients must complete a pre-admission health questionaire. You will receive a text or email with a link to complete. Please complete this as soon as possible, at least one week prior to your scheduled surgery.

2. Fasting Requirements

Do not eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight on the day preceding your surgery. Undigested food in the stomach can cause complications, and your surgery is likely to be postponed if you forget.

3. Medications and Supplements

If you are taking any prescription weight loss medications or blood thinners, please notify us immediately. These medications may require special instructions or adjustments before your surgery to ensure your safety.

4. Pregnancy

If you suspect you are pregnant, please notify our office as soon as possible, as general anesthesia and other medications may be harmful to the developing fetus.

5. Health Changes

If you experience any health changes between your most recent visit to our office and the day of surgery, please notify us immediately. Even minor symptoms, such as an elevated temperature, cough, or cold, should be reported.

6. Valuables

Leave your jewelry and other valuables at home. The surgery center is not responsible for lost or misplaced items.

7. Clothing

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You will be provided with a patient gown by the hospital or surgery center.

8. Transportation and Support

Arrange for an adult to either be with you or to drive you home following surgery. It is also important to have someone stay with you the first night following your surgery, as you may need assistance during your recovery.

9. Final Instructions

The Friday before your surgery, a nurse will contact you to provide you with any final pre-operative instructions and let you know what time to arrive at the hospital or surgery center.
