Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct a deviated nasal septum, a condition where the cartilage and bone dividing the nasal passages are displaced or off-center. A deviated septum can cause breathing difficulties, chronic nasal congestion, snoring, sinus infections, and sleep disturbances. This procedure helps restore normal airflow and improve overall nasal function.

What Causes a Deviated Septum?

The most common causes of a deviated septum are trauma or injury (such as a broken nose), being born with a crooked septum (congenital), asymmetrical growth of the nasal structures during development, and previous nasal surgery. A deviated septum is quite common, with about 80-90% of people having some degree of septal deviation. In many cases, it’s mild and doesn’t cause noticeable symptoms. However, more significant deviations can lead to breathing difficulties, sinus issues, or snoring.

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to straighten a deviated septum, usually done under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision inside the nose, removes or reshapes the deviated cartilage and bone, and then repositions the mucosal lining. The procedure is minimally-invasive with no bruising or change to your appearance.Β

There is only mild discomfort after septoplasty, and no heavy packing is required.Β  Recovery typically takes 1-2 weeks, with congestion being the most bothersome symptom.
